Manage User Attributes

User attributes are properties used to classify users with certain characteristics.  They can be used as filter criteria in user search.  In addition, user attributes can be accessible in the Teach menu for instructors as filter criteria for learners.

There are eight standard attributes provided with the LMS that can be configured to your organization's needs.  If more than eight are needed, you can create attribute extensions to provide additional attributes.

To configure user attributes, your role must have unrestricted access to the User Attributes Configuration feature.

Configure User Attributes

The eight standard user attributes are named User Attribute 1 through User Attribute 8. You can define any number of values for each attribute, with each value have its own unique code and name.

  1. Go to Manage Center > Users > User Manager > User Attribute Configuration.
  2. Select the appropriate user attribute.
  3. Begin entering entering values, including a unique code and label for each option.
  4. Select the check boxes to specify where the user attribute will be used (user search or teach review)
  5. To set permissions for the attribute, click the Permissions button.  Unrestricted access allows the user to view and make updates to the attribute.
  6. Click Save.

The example below shows configuration for a Workforce Type attribute:

Create & Configure User Attribute Extensions

After creating new user attribute extensions, they are set up similarly to the standard user attributes.

  1. Go to Manage Center > Users > User Manager > User Attribute Extension.
  2. Click + Create User Attribute Extension.
  3. Begin entering entering values, including a unique code and label for each option.
  4. Select the check boxes to specify where the user attribute will be used (user search or teach review)
  5. To set permissions for the attribute, click the Permissions button.  Unrestricted access allows the user to view and make updates to the attribute.
  6. Click Save.

Assign Attributes to Users

User attributes can be assigned in the user editor and also in user import. The example below shows the Workforce Type attribute selected in the user profile.
