Skins

PeopleFluent Learning LMS supports multiple skins for pages that use the legacy user interface (UI), allowing all users on a given instance to have a look and feel that is specific to their preferences or the branding for their organization. Skins comprise multiple files that define graphics, presentation styles, primary navigation and a widget page template.

Pages that use the responsive UI can't be skinned.  This includes the home page, current courses, course catalog, catalog search and course calendar.

Generally, skins are assigned to users by an administrator, but can permission can be granted to users to choose their own skin in the user profile.

To ensure consistent navigation, PeopleFluent recommends using the PeopleFluent_LMS_Default skin when the responsive UI is enabled.

This article focuses on exporting, uploading and editing the layout properties of a skin. Additional details can be found in the Skin Customization Guide in the PeopleFluent support site.

To manage skins, your role must have unrestricted access to the Screen Layout Manager feature.

Export a Skin

Exported Skin ZIP files contain the skin.properties file and any supporting files, such as navigations.xml, style sheets (CSS), images, widgets and fonts. Exporting a skin enables you to edit its constituent files and troubleshoot issues, before re-uploading it.

  1. Go to Manage Center > System > General Settings > Screen Layout Manager.
  2. In the Installed Layouts field, select the appropriate layout from the drop-down options.
  3. Click Export.

The ZIP file is downloaded to your browser's default download folder.

Upload a New Skin

New skins must be uploaded as ZIP files containing the skin.properties file and any supporting files.

When you import a skin with the same file name as an existing skin, the existing skin is replaced.

  1. On the Screen Layout Manager page click Upload.
  2. Click Choose File and select the ZIP file in the file browser.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Enter a new name for the skin (optional)
  5. Click Import. When the skin has been imported, the page title changes to Saved.
  6. Click the Screen Layout Manager link to return.

Delete a Skin

  1. On the Screen Layout Manager page select the appropriate option in the Installed Layouts field.
  2. Click Delete.
  3. Click OK.

You can't delete a skin that is being used by one or more users.

Edit a Skin's Layout Properties

By default, only the user who uploaded a skin to the LMS can edit it. Skin owners can configure their skins' permissions to allow other administrators to view or edit the layout properties of their skins. To edit a skin's layout properties, administrators must have a system role with unrestricted access to the Screen Layout Manager feature. Roles with read-only access to the Screen Layout Manager feature can only export skins to a ZIP file.

  1. On the Screen Layout Manager page select the appropriate option in the Installed Layouts field.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Take one or more of the following actions to configure or edit the layout properties.
  • Configure a custom primary navigation -  in the navigation.xml field, click the Replace (to replace an existing filed) Upload (if there is no existing file) or Delete button. Without an associated navigations.xml file the skin will use the default LMS primary navigation.
  • Select a widget page template - choose a template to specify the widget page layout for the skin.
  • Choose between fixed or dynamic page width - select Dynamic or Fixed.  If you choose fixed, enter the width in pixels in the Pixels field.
  • Choose the navigation style - select an option in the Navigation Style field to place navigation on the left or at the top of the screen.
  1. Click Save.
